Description
The STIHL MS 500i petrol chainsaw is an innovative tool and the world’s first chainsaw with electronically controlled fuel injection. Its agile, performance-optimised engine accelerates very quickly. Thanks to its extremely successful lightweight design, this tool achieves an impressively low power-to-weight ratio of 1.24 kg/kW. This high-torque machine is a powerful solution for use in professionally harvesting large timber.
The MS 500i features a simple start-up sequence as well as very good starting behaviour under all usage conditions. Sensory fuel metering guarantees that the mixture is directly adapted to the oxygen content of the air. Like the MS 462, this saw can be very easily pivoted and – thanks to its new bumper spikes and sprocket cover – can be guided close to tree trunks.
HIGH PERFORMANCE IN COMPACT DESIGN
The electronic fuel injection control unit continuously calculates the correct fuel supply and the ideal ignition time, and injection is performed directly into the crankcase via the injection valve. Additionally, sensors measure air pressure and internal and external temperature, and pass information on to the control unit. This can use the identified values to determine the optimum fuel quantity and ignition timing. This means that your tool offers more power from a similar weight and installation space compared to engines without injection.
EFFORTLESS START-UP
The decompression valve makes it easier to start your tool. When starting, you can allow some of the compressed mixture to escape from the cylinder by opening the valve. This protects the start-up system and reduces the amount of force required on the starter cord.
FOR OPTIMISED RUNNING CHARACTERISTICS
During work, your chainsaw uses a pressure and temperature sensor on the engine to measure the fuel. The control unit processes the values measured by the sensor so that the system adapts to the operating conditions. The optimised measurement of the fuel also achieves the best possible running behaviour.
NO NEED FOR A START POSITION
Thanks to electronic fuel injection, your chainsaw does not need a start position. In addition, the manual fuel pump is easily accessible, making the start-up process even easier.
HIGHLY POWER-EFFICIENT
With the STIHL 2-MIX engine, you can reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, and therefore operating costs. This 2-stroke engine is low-maintenance and uses fuel efficiently even at high power levels. Use a mixture of petrol and engine oil as fuel. The STIHL 2-MIX engine complies with the strict EU Stage V emissions directive.
FOR MORE PLEASANT WORK
Vibrations can occur when you put your tools through their paces, and these are particularly noticeable in the grip area. The buffer and spring elements of the STIHL anti-vibration system reduce the transmission of engine vibrations to the handle area and therefore to your body. The result is that your tool is more comfortable to hold and your work is much less tiring.
FOR A FIRM GRIP ON THE TREE
The rounded arrangement of the bumper spike teeth matches the radial contours of trees. This means that your chainsaw will bite even better into the wood when cutting to length and felling.
FOR SIMPLE AND SECURE RE-TENSIONING
Side-mounted chain tensioning allows for protected, easy and quick chain tensioning and replacement. The tensioning screw is inserted laterally through the sprocket cover.
SAVES YOUR ENERGY
The optimised sprocket cover is narrower and flatter than the previous model. This improvement enables effortless delimbing and excellent chip removal. It has integrated slide rails and a guide edge, making it easier to guide the power tool along the trunk.

STIHL Chainsaw Maintenance Guide

Maintenance measures each time you use your chainsaw
- Before using your chainsaw, check it is safe. Start with a visual check: can you see any damage on the chainsaw or its controls? Are the guide bar, saw chain, chain catcher and other accessories correctly fitted? If a repair is needed, take the chainsaw to a dealer to look at.
- Test the throttle trigger, throttle trigger lockout, choke knob, stop switch and master control lever (subject to model).
- Test to make sure the chain brake is working.
- Check the condition of the saw chain (does it need further maintenance in terms of sharpness and chain tension?) and the chainsaw guide bar.
- Is the chain properly lubricated?
- Check whether the fuel tank cap and the oil tank cap are sealed.
- There must not be any fuel leaking from the chainsaw.
- After use, clean the chainsaw and remove any shavings and dust.
Periodic maintenance measures for long-term chainsaw care
- Clean the guide bar (the sprocket nose, the oil inlet hole, the oil outlet channel and the bar groove), the chain sprocket cover, the cylinder fins and the inside of the shroud and the filter cover.
- We recommend turning over and, if necessary, deburring the guide bar at regular intervals or when you notice signs of wear.
- After breaking in a new saw chain, check the chain tension and ensure the chain is always lubricated.
Ongoing chainsaw maintenance is key
Cleaning after every use is the most important maintenance measure to keep your chainsaw in great condition. That’s because it picks up resin, sawdust and other substances which, in combination with the chain lubricant, can soon cause real problems: resin accumulates and hardens, and can eventually make its way into the housing and guide bar. Our advice is that all traces of resin should be removed from the bar and housing at the earliest possible opportunity. We recommend you make STIHL Varioclean part of your maintenance routine when cleaning your chainsaw.
An overview of maintenance for electric and petrol chainsaws
Electric chainsaw maintenance
Electric chainsaws have a simpler construction than petrol tools, so they require fewer cleaning and maintenance steps:
- Remove shavings and dust from the whole chainsaw (use a soft brush, paintbrush or STIHL resin solvent)
- Clean the sprocket area with a damp cloth or STIHL resin solvent
- Clean the bar groove
- Remove any burrs forming on the bar groove
- Clean the chainsaw ventilation slits with a paintbrush
Use a STIHL guide bar leveller to remove burrs from the guide bar.
Cordless chainsaw maintenance
As well as the measures listed above, if you have a cordless chainsaw, we recommend some additional measures:
- Remove foreign bodies from the battery slot and clean the battery slot with a damp cloth.
- Clean the electrical contacts in the battery slot with a paintbrush or soft brush.
Petrol chainsaw maintenance
If you have a petrol chainsaw, there are a few other maintenance considerations to keep in mind:
- Check that the fuel and chain lubricant tanks are sealed and that no fuel or lubricant is leaking from them.
- Regularly clean the air filter and the air filter housing.
- Check the spark plug for wear and remove any soot on a regular basis.
