The highly anticipated EGO Z6 zero turn mower is finally here! The power & performance of petrol from the first consumer battery zero-turn to use removable batteries that work with your other EGO powered tools.
We’ve been excited to get hands-on with the Z6 since it was announced in the US earlier last year, we’re fans of the tools EGO produce, they make some of the best battery powered garden tools, including Strimmers, Chainsaws, & Lawnmowers. So when we heard about this Zero-turn using the same excellent EGO batteries, we knew it would be a winner.
Fully loaded with 6 10Ah EGO 56V ARC Lithium™ batteries this machine can cut up to 3 acres, and up to 2 acres with 4 10Ah batteries. Clearly, this depends on the thickness of the cut, how wet the lawn is, and your speed. Also, don’t forget if you need a larger working area than that, you can quickly swap the batteries out just like you’d fuel up a petrol machine. With the included 1600W charger, four 10Ah batteries will charge in around 2 hours and the full six 10Ah batteries charge in around 3 hours. That’s some of the fastest charging we’ve seen in the industry.
The pairing of four high-performance brushless motors & consistent power from the EGO batteries gives this ZTR the equivalent of 22 horsepower. The motors are positioned on the 2 beefy rear wheels & underneath on each side of the deck.
On the subject of the deck, it’s a twin-bladed 42″ (107cm) deck which is set up for either side discharge or mulching with the mulch plug. It’s got a nice range of 10 heights of cut between 1.5 – 4.5″ (3 – 11.4cm).
One of the crucial things with any ride-on is comfort, and the Z6 seems to tick all the boxes in this department. The seat is well suspended and is cushiony soft rather than some of the stiffer ones you find on the market. The lap bars are fully adjustable, with adjustments available both up/down as well as forward/back, so all users should be able to find a position comfortable for them.
The level of control you get with this being a battery machine over traditional petrol is where it comes into its own. The EGO Z6 is fully adjustable from its digital control panel. On the right-hand side of the control panel, you can adjust your blade speed so you can adjust for what you’re cutting, clearly, the lower you have this the better battery range you’ll get. Over on the left-hand side, you’ve got travel speed, you can adjust this again to suit conditions. When you want to get around quickly you can pop it into travel mode for speeds up to 8 MPH, however, in this mode, you can’t engage the blades. The machine has 3 different modes; control, standard, & sport. Each of the modes alters the demeanour of the Z6 to handle your requirements. These can be changed on the fly from the bottom of the display. EGO has been clever with these key controls giving them all physical buttons over touch controls, this makes them easy to adjust quickly without any hassle or fiddling with temperamental capacitive buttons or touch screens that seem to be taking over other industries.
In the centre of the machine between your feet you have a power gauge, which constantly keeps you informed on your state of charge, as you get accustomed to the machine, you’ll start to get a feel for how long a bar lasts you with your settings. So while there’s no readout of your total range, we think this is good enough to stop you from getting caught out of charge.
On a slope the EGO Z6 ZTR comes into its own, the powerful brushless motors give it an immense amount of torque which never seems to run out, this gives you fantastic control on banks & hills where you don’t need to maintain your momentum, you can cut at the speed that suits you. I think the tyres on the decently sized rear wheels help on this front too, putting plenty of contract between you and the soil.
