The Importance Of Servicing Your Mower

professional-lawnmower-servicing

Why do I need to service my lawnmower?

Like your car, if you want a long reliable life out of your machinery, then regular servicing is essential.

Most manufacturers require proof of regular servicing in order to maintain the extended warranties they offer. They do this because they know that a regularly serviced machine is much less likely to fail and will give the owner a much better experience with their machine.

If you do notice any changes in the performance of your mower, our specialist service team is always available to advise over the phone, so don’t hesitate to give us a ring.

Another obvious benefit of professional mower servicing is getting your mower back to its full potential, improving power, efficiency, and quality of cut. In all our mower services at Buxtons we sharpen the blades, allowing them to cut the grass easier and leave it with a neater finish. Sharpened blades also put less strain on the mower and will help it collect easier. Leaving your lawn picture-perfect.

How often should I service my mower?

Manufacturers recommend that machinery is serviced every 25 to 50 hours of use. In normal household use, this equates to once a year, but it does depend on the use each machine gets, the type of work being done, and its age.

A commercial petrol mower will need servicing multiple times a year, whereas a battery machine used on a small patch of grass will only need a check over once a year.

It’s best to chat with our service team if you’re unsure what your machine needs.

Catch problems before they become big repair bills.

During a service, apart from sharpening blades and changing oils and filters, Buxtons technicians will check belts, cables, switches etcThis enables us to highlight any problems with your machine and can catch them before it can get more serious which can be more costly. So, in the long run, regular servicing will often save you money.

With the changes in petrol composition, we are seeing an increase in carburettor issues. The new E10 fuel contains more ethanol which is not only aggressive to machine parts but also absorbs moisture from the air which increases the corrosion in the fuel system. Once fuel is saturated with water it will not burn as well and can cause starting and running issues.

We advise our customers if they are not using their machinery for a period above 4 weeks, to store their machine with no fuel in, and to only use fresh fuel when reusing it. There are alternatives to petrol which don’t have these issues, please talk to our service staff to find out more.

Due to the increase in fuel-related problems, we clean out carburettors on every full service, replacing any damaged components.

Timing is key. Plan ahead.

It’s easy to forget about your mower in the shed or garage over winter, and only remember it needs servicing when the grass starts growing. The problem is, everyone else’s grass is growing too, and they also need their mower serviced.

Getting your mower serviced in the off-season is a great way to ensure it is ready when you need it. No messing around and having to get it serviced or fixed when we’re at our busiest.

In fact, if you book your mower for a Winter service today between October & December you can get 10% off as an extra incentive.
